🎯 Situational Leadership

M1-M4 + S1-S4 · Circle of Influence

Lead to Fit — M1-M4 vs S1-S4

  • No single leadership style fits every employee. Match your style to the development level (M-level) of that person for THAT task.
  • M1 → S1 DIRECTING — new task, high enthusiasm, little skill. Give clear step-by-step instruction.
  • M2 → S2 SUPPORTING — some skill, motivation dips. Listen, support, involve in decisions.
  • M3 → S3 COACHING — capable but unsure. Ask questions, let them think, give recognition.
  • M4 → S4 DELEGATING — expert. Set the goal, let go, check lightly.
  • The same person can be M4 on one task and M1 on another — adapt per TASK, not per person.

The Circle of Influence

  • Circle of Influence — what you can influence DIRECTLY: your behaviour, communication, example, asking questions, taking action.
  • Circle of Involvement — what affects you but you canNOT change alone: management decisions, deliveries, market changes.
  • Effective team leads spend their energy on the inner circle. Frustrated leads stay stuck in the outer circle.
  • 5-step model: 1) Notice the situation · 2) Separate involvement from influence · 3) Choose your response · 4) Take ownership · 5) Let go of what you cannot control.
